The City of Chicago issued rules and regulations for exterior wall maintenance to take steps in providing public safety throughout Chicago. Buildings of at least six stories or 80 feet or more in height are required to comply with these regulations. Critical exams are done every four years. Ongoing inspections (short forms) are required for each of the three intervening years. The initial critical exam for a building built prior to 1950 must be completed by November 1, 2002. The initial critical exam for a building built after January 1, 1950 must be completed by November 1, 2004.
